Fifty Mexican fashion designers were invited to create three looks in cotton muslin to mimic the toile– the classic prototype that ateliers and designers make before a final garment. The exhibition brief dictated that the work be inspired by the history of Uruapan, a small industrial town in Mexico with a rich textile tradition that is now home to the cultural centre. The three looks which comprise CRUDO, named after the rawness of the material and its off-white colour, are inspired by the contrast between the urban and natural landscapes in Uruapan. Seen through aerial photographs, urban and natural dance around each other, with a dynamic tension of being simultaneously brought together and of tearing apart from each other. Exploring how performance artists like Pina Bausch use movement and rope, as well as how intricate shibari knots give rope dimension and movement, the project was also concerned with finding different ways of tying strap to bag and bag to body. Inspired by lattice structures, the movement of seaweed underwater and Korean freestyle skater girls, the material exploration seeked to find softness and flexibility in traditionally hard materials and strength and rigidity in seemingly soft materials. The result is a detachable, fully 3D-printed ballerina skating shoe, made almost entirely from bio-plastics. The upper is a minimalist, transluscent ballerina slipper that is extremely lightweight and envelops the foot softly. Detachable straps allow the user to wrap around the foot and ankle for a stronger hold and for the shoe to truly become an extension of the body. The detachable sole is a complex 3D-printed lattice structure that varies in thickness throughout to allow full range of movement of the foot when skating. It combines airiness, lightness and flexibility to create a super strong structure that protects the foot by absorbing shock in case of impact. The vast landscapes and natural rhythmic patterns of the sand, as well as the monotone artworks of Pierre Soulages and Piero Manzoni, are the main influence for the colour and material design. Nomadic tribes served as inspiration for the functional nature of the garments and accessories. The finished prototype is the DUNAS modular jacket and backpack, conceived for a day in the desert where temperatures will greatly vary, therefore allowing the user to roll up or completely remove the sleeves and collar. An innovative cutting technique creates a subtle pattern on the hard leather, which allows the material to be extremely flexible and extra breathable, while still retaining its inherent protective elements. The webbing straps allow the user to adjust the jacket at every level for a snug, protective fit. There is a juxtaposition of soft, light, and airy fabrics against hard, textured materials that frame both the body and garments themselves. The contrasting materials aim to balance each other out. Cuts and textures made on the leather make it a softer, pliable material that echoes the patterns in the sand, while over-layed panels and gatherings in the soft fabrics create the illusion of a sturdier material. Garments in monotone, muted and transluscent fabrics drape around the body comfortably, and the strappy details and leather accessories in saturated colours create outlines around the body. All the pieces in the collection, including the accessories, are light and transformable, perfect for the nomadic spirit of the wearer. I established material binaries— leather and metallic hardware— that became physical and symbolic borderlines that limited and framed my practice. Working in the borderlands between them, I prototyped directly on a mannequin with found objects and leftover materials to challenge the relationship between body and bag, and find innovative and unconventional ways to put the materials together. All the final pieces are made of deer leather and an assortment of metallic hardware, found objects that include horse-riding equipment, boating clasps, and religious mementos.
